Grassroots Ecology

Location

San Francisco to Santa Clara

Category

Sustainable Practices, Ecosystem Restoration, Ecosystem Education

Mission Statement

Grassroots Ecology leverages the power of volunteers to create healthy lands across Silicon Valley. They restore native plants to open spaces and neighborhoods, steward creeks and watersheds, and provide hands-on nature education.

Engagement Opportunities

They offer hands-on ways to learn about the natural world while making a positive impact. Volunteer with them to improve local ecosystems, or join a naturalist or community science event to explore nature in open spaces and urban places.

They currently offer a Youth Stewards program for the winter 2024 season. The application will soon open for the summer. This program is a 1.5-3 hour weekly commitment, and allows youth to engage in and improve their local ecosystems.

They also offer a Summer Naturalist Internship and a paid, 10 month Habitat Restoration Internship. While applications for the 2023-2024 season have closed, check back in early 2025 for applications for the 2024-25 year.

What They Do

They do a lot of work in natural habitats to help provide cleaner public lands and waterways, bring more biologically diverse ecosystems with higher-functioning wildlife habitat, and mitigate the frequency and effects of floods, fires, droughts, and rising temperatures in the Bay Area. They improve our local ecosystems through research, education, and habitat restoration.
